The story
From Latin aequus (“equal, balanced”) + salina (“pertaining to salt”) + calcalino (“pertaining to calcium or lime”) + English ceraceous + alumino- + Latin cupreo (“pertaining to copper”) + English vitriolic. Coined in the 18th century by Edward Strother to describe the mineral-rich spa waters of Bath, England.
