The story
Pseudo-Grecism, from amok + -o- + Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō, “to split”) + -ia. Schmidt (1984), who probably coined the term, gives the derivation as "amuck^([sic]) (in a state of frenzy) + schizo (slit)".
