The story

From Latin Daunii (“ancient tribe”) + -o- + -mycin (“antibiotic”), from the name of the Apulian tribe historically inhabiting the region from which came the soil sample, from which the drug was obtained. Coined by a team of scientists at Farmitalia, an Italian pharmaceutical company, who are credited with the joint discovery of daunorubicin together with the French company Rhône-Poulenc.
