The story
From goofy (“riding on a snowboard or surfboard with one’s right foot forward”, adjective) + foot (noun), referring to the way Goofy, a Walt Disney character in the form of an anthropomorphic dog, was depicted surfing in the cartoon Hawaiian Holiday (1937).
