The story

From Latin rubidus (“red, reddish”) + -o- + -mycin (“antibiotic”), from the deep red color of the crystalline powder. Coined by a team of scientists at Rhône-Poulenc, a French pharmaceutical company, who are credited with the joint discovery of daunorubicin together with the Italian company Farmitalia.
