Pseudo-Hispanism, derived from Spanish el (“the”) + Granada. Granada is a feminine proper noun in Spanish and would take the feminine definite article la as opposed to the masculine definite article el. Originally named Granada after the city of Granada in Spain, but later changed to its current name following an error in recording the place name by the Post Office in 1909.
