   THis Province of Huquang, divided in the middle by the River Kiang, into a Northern and Southern part, is not inferior to the others in bigneſs ; for it begins in the South in twenty ſix Degrees and twenty Minutes Northern-Latitude, and ends in thirty four Degrees, a Tract of hundred thirty ſeven Leagues and a half ; its length extends to ſeven Degrees, a Tract of a hundred fifty five Leagues.

   In 1703, Kangxi made a significant concession to the military officials in Huguang province (which later became Hubei and Hunan provinces). He endorsed a proposal by the governor-general of the Huguang province that allowed officers a certain number of so-called qinding or suiding—both meaning “retainers” or “servant soldiers”’—who were supposed to function as officers’ personal servants and not to be counted in the combat force.
