Kukeng

A small-scale bamboo shoot processiing^([sic – meaning processing]) plant has been set up at Kukeng, Yunlin county under the Accelerated Rural Development Program.

Finally we crossed over the Choshui River. I guessed that the truck had been following was headed for Kaohsiung, a huge seaport at the southern end of the island, but I turned off and went into a small place called Huwei. That was part of the plan. Laurie never went there. The big car would be noticed, but nobody actually knew who it belonged to. I took a break, bought some things. Then I crossed back under the freeway, zigzagged along minor roads, and came into Kukeng from the south.

The quake also caused a landslide in Yunlin County's Kukeng (古坑) Township, burying two vehicles carrying a family to Tsaoling (草嶺) village. Four individuals, two dead and two seriously injured, were pulled out from the pile of rocks by a navy rescue team and sent to a hospital in Touliu.

Tea may well be Asia's drink but coffee is catching up fast--even in an area renowned for its tea cultivation, such as central Taiwan's Kukeng Township. In Yunlin County's Kukeng--a vertiginous mountain village of 35,000 inhabitants--the main crop is oolong tea.

Koo made the remarks at a commencement ceremony for the charity drive, where the foundation lit a 17-meter Christmas tree. The event featured a violin performance by a class of elementary school students from Huashan Elementary School (華山國小) in Yunlin’s Kukeng Township (古坑), who were able to pursue their interest in music with the help of the foundation.
