Farmer Mettohti Imin, his teenage son Abdusalam Mettohti, and a family friend were taken into custody in late March after confronting “more than 100 police officers” who had come to seize land communally owned by Aktash village in Xinjiang’s Laskuy township^([sic – meaning town]), a resident told RFA’s Uyghur Service.

Earlier this year, authorities in the township^([sic – meaning town]) of Laskuy, Hotan County^([sic – meaning City]), issued an announcement in the town seat of Aktash Village that “all restaurants and supermarkets in our village should place five different brands of alcohol and cigarettes in their shops” and create “eye-catching displays” to promote the forbidden products. “[A]nybody who neglects this notice and fails to act” the notice warned, “will see their shops sealed off, their business suspended, and legal action pursued against them.”

In April 2015, authorities in Aktash village, Laskuy township, Hotan county, Hotan prefecture, XUAR, ordered local shopkeepers to sell alcohol and cigarettes — the use of which many local Muslims considered a "sin" and "self-destructive," respectively¹¹⁷- as well as to display the alcohol and cigarettes prominently.¹¹⁸
