Meanings
plural Lullists
- A partisan of Jean-Baptiste Lully.
Rameau had soon so many admirers of his own, and met with so much opposition from the admirers of Lulli that two parties of Lullists and of Ramists were formed.
1862, Sutherland Edwards, History of the Opera, from Its Origin in Italy to the Present Time, volume 1, London, page 2192 more examples
In opposition to the beliefs of the Lullists, the Ramists sought to dispel conventionalized ballets that treated of gods and godesses, demi-gods and heroes acting in a preconceived manner that displayed the grandeurs of their divinity, and substituted a ballet depicting the world as it exists.
1943, A Study of the Development of the Art of Dancing, page 55The war between Lullists and Ramists represents a variation on the French–Italian theme, for the Lullists castigated Rameau’s music for its Italian virtuosity and eroticism devoid of true expression. This new conflict also reflects a new setting for the old sexual stereotyping, which pitted the conservative old father against the radical young daughter as advocates, respectively, of traditional and modern musical styles.
