Those that fled were predominantly royalists, leftists, and members of the Islamist-Socialist Mujahedin-e Khalgh, or the MEK, which, until its recent delisting by Washington, was considered a terrorist group by Iran and America alike. Some of those immigrants and their descendants became a visible part of the cultural scene in California, in Tehrangeles, the worst of which were depicted in the unflattering reality show Shahs of Sunset.
