Zhang Lanfeng was a native of Zhecheng county in eastern Henan.[...]Zhang's political background clearly revealed that he had four basic social ties: his local ties in Zhecheng county, his military ties with Feng's Guominjun and later with the Northwest Army (xibei jun), his teacher-student ties at the Northwest Military Academy, and his tie to Chiang Kaishek.

Zhecheng county where Shuangmiao village is located is one of the worst hit areas in Henan Province. No one comes into the county from outside now, so investment has dried up. The farming industry has also been ruined.
