   Approximately 90% of the trees are in two adjacent river valleys in Zhonglu Town, Lichuan, Hubei: the Xiaohe River Valley and Shiziba River Valley (unpublished data from the Metasequoia Station).

   The main population occurs in a 25 km long and 1.5 km wide strip along the Modao River in the Shui-sha-ba Valley, Zhonglu Town, Lichuan County, Hubei Province at elevations ranging from 900—1250 m.
