Licorice root has been used for centuries to treat digestive disorders. It can also soothe chancre sores. However, at high doses it can be dangerous, as it causes high blood pressure, loss of potassium, and swelling, all due to a component in licorice called glycyrrhizic^([sic]) acid. When this component is removed, what remains is called deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), which has no side effects.
