I had not heard of THE DEADMAN’S HAND before I solved Mike Torch’s poker-faced puzzle. The first thing that jolted me was solving the first two theme entries (17- and 26 Across), realizing they both began with the same word, and thinking that perhaps a mistake had been made. Prather’s ruminations sparked a light for many who saw they were in the dark.
