Siberian households used to store the little half-moon or triangular meat-stuffed dumplings in earthenware jars, buried in the ice; the ice was chipped away with an axe to get at the pelmeny jars. Pelmeny were a favorite for long winter journeys along with shchi and pirozhky, kept frozen on top of the sleigh during the trip and warmed up at the night’s stopping place.
