The upshot is that a chess player is faced with an average of 35 choices for each move. Go averages 250 options. This figure is known as a problem's "branching factor," and it is a bane of AI. If you multiply 250 by itself enough times -- to evaluate possible responses, counter-responses, and so forth -- you quickly arrive at a number of positions much greater than the number of atoms in the universe, which would take all of the world's computers well over a million years to map out. In fact, it wasn't even until last year that anyone managed to actually calculate how many. (It's about 2.081681994 x 10^170. Or, in plain English, two hundred quinquinquagintillion.)

That number, however, is vastly exceeded by the number of possible Go positions—there are about 2.081681994 × 10¹⁷⁰, which is two hundred quinquinquagintillion—and vastly more than the number of atoms in the universe, which helps explain why it was a much more interesting challenge than a game like checkers or chess.

2023, SolomonCliff, “Synopsis”, in Asher the Insane, via WebNovel, archived from the original on 31 Dec 2025I noticed the money per second calculations that show up on each business's bar doesn't correspond to how much I'm actually money I'm actually getting. For example, on Earth I currently have 1.007 quinquinquagintilion /s showing up on my Banks alone, but I take like 5+ seconds to actually make 1 quinquinquagintillion. Is there any reason for this, or is it some sort of bug?
