The story
From New Latin, from Ancient Greek αἷμα (haîma, “blood”), + μήτρα (mḗtra, “uterus”), + κόλπος (kólpos, “any hollow space; womb”); essentially equivalent to a surface analysis of hemato- + metro- + colp- + -us.
