The story

smol (“small”) + bean (“someone small and cute”). Originally used in DoggoLingo and similar internet subcultures to describe cute and innocent characters (see also cinnamon roll), subsequently adopted ironically to describe internet users who act aggressively to others, but perceive criticism towards themselves as bullying.
