The major coal mine now serving Ulaanbaatar—at Baganuur—is a two hour drive west of the capital. Baganuur has a couple of surprisingly nice hotels, which cater to the foreign technical advisors who periodically inspect the mine. The town is just off the eastbound highway to Khentii Aimag.

Depending on road conditions, travel is up the Herlen River Valley by 4WD to the base of the mountain and then a 653-metre (2,144-foot) climb on foot, but it is preferable to make the entire journey by horse from the town. (The area can also be reached via the coal-mining town of Baganuur farther down the main road.)
