Origin

Uncertain. The name of the city in Ohio was given by the American politician James Kilbourne (1770–1850), who laid it out in 1821. One theory is that is a blend of beautiful + Cyrus, after Cyrus the Great (c. 600 – 530 BCE), the founder of the Achaemenid Empire. An alternative theory is that it was named after Busiris, a city of ancient Egypt. The city in North Dakota was renamed in 1908 after the Bucyrus Company whose steam shovels were used to build the railroad grade within it, itself named after the city in Ohio, its headquarters.
