1. biologyAny plant belonging to the Monotropoideae.
2. chemistryA polymorph that does not have a reversible transformation into another form; A polymorphic crystal for which one form is more stable than any other form when cooled below the melting point.

   These can be differentiated on a thermal scan where an endothermic transition indicates enantiotropes and an exothermic transition indicates monotropes.
