plural oriental plane trees

  1. A chinar; a tree of the species Platanus orientalis, native from Kashmir, through the Middle East to nearby Europe, now naturalized in much of Europe.

The oriental plane tree has a most strange history. It is native to southeastern Europe and the Middle East; expanded into western Europe at about the same time that the grapevine, olive, chestnut and walnut were brought west by early farmers.
