resurrection1
plural resurrections
- countableuncountableThe act of arising from the dead and becoming alive again.
The resurrection of Lazarus was a mighty demonstration of Jesus' power over death; but it was not the resurrection unto life eternal. Only Jesus' own resurrection could demonstrate that. The resurrection of Lazarus was of great importance for the disciples.

In medieval thinking, the resurrection of Lazarus was closely tied to Christ's death, because it was a prefiguration of the Savior's rising from the dead. Also, in the internal historicity of the Bible accounts, this event had persuaded many Jews to convert and had pushed the priests to persecute Jesus.
1999, Death and Dying in the Middle Ages, →ISBN, →LCCN, →OCLC, page 357Jesus had raised the dead before. There was that young girl near Capernaum. Of course, the scribes had said that she was not really dead. Just in a deep sleep. But Peter, James, and John, who witnessed the child's resurrection, assured her that the girl had been completely cold, still, and lifeless. And when Jesus had said "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" the child had come back to life.

The Resurrection does not mean that a dead man came to life again. We are not faced here with a simple problem in resuscitation. Resuscitation is not resurrection, since resuscitation never reaches beyond the natural. The Resurrection means that the Eternal Word who manifested himself in the form of the human—"and was made man"—to acquire all the meaning and all the experience of a human life, and to be means whereby God comes personally within the orbit of humanity as redeeming power, now manifests himself, or is manifested, in still another form. The Resurrection narratives are hopelessly confused on the supposition that they described the activities of a dead man restored to life again. Even on the most literalistic view of the story of Lazarus, it bears a radically different meaning form the accounts of the Risen Christ.
1940, Edwin Lewis, “The Church and Revelation”, in A Philosophy of the Christian Revelation, 1st edition (Religion), Harper & Brothers Publishers, →OCLC, page 65Death, like suffering, is an evil, and Jesus the source of life and healing, sees both as enemies. He conquers physical death and restores Lazarus to life. It is resuscitation, not resurrection. Resurrection brings a wonderful, new, and transformed life. Lazarus returned to the same life he had before.
1978, “I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE”, in Where Jesus Walked (Religion), Walls, Mississippi: Quadriga Art, Inc., page 39Seeing the risen Jesus was not an experience of empirical data; it was experience of faith. For the very best empirical experience might have achieved was an experience of resuscitation not resurrection. Recall the story of Lazarus. He was mortal and he died. He was resuscitated and therefore was living again, but even after his resuscitation he was still mortal. Hence people could see him before and after because in both cases he was mortal: and therefore the subject of empirical data even after his resuscitation. The mortal Jesus -the Jesus before his death- could like the mortal Lazarus have been experienced as a fact of empirical data. The Risen Jesus, however, could only be experienced by faith. For resurrection is not returning from the dead it is a leap beyond death to a totally different kind of existence.

But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
